 Dear Friends,

Just a quick note to say, now that our mega-event, the Wildflower Pilgrimage is behind us (it was extraordinary by the way!!), our attention is turning to this little tiny window time that lies ahead in which to limit the highly vigorous garlic mustard from replacing some of the best of our native flower displays. This year we are very alarmed on how it has spread so quickly into some very delicate areas.

We could use 30-40 people to do all that needs to be done.........and since we are starting the week with only two people -- we are repeating our invitation! Might you help??

Here's our latest plan.

Come Friday or Saturday to the 7 Caves from 9:30 until 4:00, or when you wear out, whichever comes first.

I'll be working by your side, though we may split up in smaller groups if we get enough people. If we have enough people either Friday or Saturday staying overnight, I'm still game to serve the garlic mustard pesto.

We have an daunting amount of land to cover, just to protect the highest priority sites. We may not make it down to Ohio River Bluffs, though it would be a shame if we don't -- because every year makes a huge difference.

Here's our priorities, in order of descent:

7 Caves
Cave Rd.
Barrett's Rim
Ravenwood
Ohio River Bluffs
Black Gum Woods

If we can get our "mother country" done here at the Rocky Fork Gorge on Friday and IF we have enough people to take a carpool down to the Bluffs on the Ohio River on Saturday, we will do so. I can advise you as we get closer if we have enough people to include the bluffs. TES Farm is open for lodging any day you need it, in exchange for a  minimumof 5 hours of work. If you can come on other days than Friday or Saturday, this week or next, let me know.

Please come!! Some of Ohio's best wildflower displays need your assistance in order to preserve their diversity for future generations.

PLEASE give me a call or email director@highlandssanctuary.org. If you email, be sure to leave your telephone number because we may need to chat on the phone to arrange some of the details.

Warmly,

Nancy

So we met the group and helped to finish pulling garlic mustard at Seven Caves

But we soon moved to Ravenwood, where the big stuff awaited us.

Nancy and Mark lead us into the woods.

We hear many birds, and see and hear the river below.

Marsha started pulling the garlic mustard.

I found a hillside with several large patches. (This is before.)

This is after I cleared the first patch. More awaits a bit further along.

The stuff was four feet tall in places.

After we pulled it up, we broke it and hung it on branches to dry out.

I'm making progress, but there's still more.

Finally, after at least an hour, this one section of hillside is cleared.

Time for flowers.

There's a big flower with a purple-pink water bottle.

Look close. There's bloodroot and some sort of worm.

Colorful little dude.

Right next to the bloodroot, a Jack In The Pulpit.

Leah liked the fiddle-head ferns

David (who started at 7:30) points out more garlic mustard.

Clear water, water bugs, and fish smell.

Mark clearing tree falls.

Sarah spotting garlic mustard.

Rick works sitting down.

David goes after more weeds.

Melanie arrives to take over for Nancy
