Thanksgiving Holiday Saturday, 2006

Saturday, November 25, 2006, turned out to be a pretty big day.

  • Leah and I bought me a car (2003 Subaru Forrester, Silver, 24 K miles).
  • Then we went bike riding.
  • Then Leah, Becca, Jess, Drake, Ann, Dan, Reuel, Linda, and a host of others
went to a live broadcast of Prairie Home Companion
  • Then Becca, Jess, and I went to see the newly refurbished Fountain Square
  • Then our little group went to the Palm Court in the Nederland Hotel to hear great jazz,
including two songs from Emily Ash, and enjoy the evening.

The car. (Actually, I don't sign the papers until Monday.)

We stopped for chili and gelato after our ride.

Garrison and the gang.

He told the world the ceiling was adorned with naked women. (He lied.)

The show was wonderful. We had sing-alongs, lots of laughs, and a great time!

November 25, 2006 (from the PHC website).
This week on A Prairie Home Companion we're rolling all eighteen wheels to Cincinnati,
where bluegrass and country music met high-powered broadcasting for the very first time
in the 1930's. With us this week, an amazing acoustic guitar picker (and the Stradivarius of
modern luthiers) Wayne Henderson and his extremely talented wife, Helen White. We'll have
bionic bluegrass wild man Sam Bush, the finest steel player to ever walk the earth,
Buddy Emmons, and the manhattan mastermind Andy Stein sitting in with
The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, so there may be an increased risk of spontaneous combustion
to your radio. Also with us, The Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell,
Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the News from Lake Wobegon, and much more
this Saturday from the "All Together Surprising" city of Cincinnati, USA.

After the show.

On the way to see the new Fountain Square.

There it is! All lit up!

The skaters were having a good time!

Inside the Nederland, a holiday confectionary display.

The PHC people were staying at the Nederland.
Several of them came to the Palm Court for the evening.

Leah, Ray, Emily, and Drake in the Palm Court.
One of the PHC guest stars, Helen White, took our picture.

Our friend Jim and his family chat with Helen's husband and fellow guest star, "an amazing

Jim Hart on piano and Fred Kennedy on drums with vocalist Emily Ash

Deadra Hart (Jim's daughter), now a New York City vocalist, was one of headliners
for the weekend, along with New York drummer Fred Kennedy and
Deadra's father, pianist Jim Hart. Performing in the art deco elegance of the
Palm Court Mezzanine, they provided some great live music: Jazz, Latin, and
Standards. This was Emily's third opportunity to stand in with Jim!

Some random attendees of some sort of Caledonia Festival.

We met many of the show's cast, and rumor had it that Garrison
and the rest of the crew might show up eventually, but we'd had long day
and left during the second set. The night, as they say, was still young!
