Scooter Crash, December 11, 2006
The First 20 Minutes

Unfortunate news... I crashed my Buddy today on my way to work going up Indian Hill Road from Madisonville.

I was about 2/3 of the way up a hill when found myself tooling along briskly around a right hand curve. There was a big SUV coming the other way, and even though we were both in our own lanes I think I overreacted and hit the brakes to slow down. I suspect I was leaned over too far, too.

I don't know how fast I was going, but it probably wasn't more than thirty or thirty five miles per hour, Even so I lost control on the curve and the Buddy went out from under me. The Buddy skidded across the road and the handlebars and windshield got crunched along the way. The scooter may have also hit the guardrail, but I don't know for sure.

I rolled a time or two and slid across the road, coming to rest spread-eagled
and looking up at the SUV bumper and tire a few inches from my head.

The young lady SUV driver did very well indeed to not run over me.

BTW, these pictures were taken before I had tried to take off my helmet or get up.
I think the dark line in the center of the picture above (crossing the two yellow lines)
was made by the scooter as it slid. Apparently my jacket, pants, and helmet left no mark.

I had asked an onlooker to get my camera and take a few pictures, and he obliged.

I'm hoping the damage isn't too great, but I'm pretty sure the controls on top are mashed.

My immediate view, straight up, just after the crash.

But if I turned my head to the right...

I had to lay there for a few minutes to get my breath back.

I got my helmet off and was on my feet before the police arrived.

The EMTs had me drop my drawers to look at the knee, then had me
climb in the ambulance for a ride to the emergency room.

My view from the ambulance.

.As the ambulance drove away with me I saw the Indian Hill Rangers rolling the bike
to an out-of-the-way spot, and I was told later they had it towed to Milford Towing.
